Jose Marti was crucial in gaining Cuban independence from the Spanish in the late 19th century. He was known for being a Cuban National hero. He fought passionately not only for Cuban independence, but also for the unity of all Latin American people. Marti’s writings echo Bolivar’s dreams for a cohesive, independent Latin America, free of any foreign influence, and by being a symbol for Cuban Independence. Marti goes a step beyond Bolivar however, foreseeing and condemning US imperialism and arguing for the equality of all races. He dedicated his short life to the promotion of liberaty and intellectual independence to all Spanish Americans.
